The NMFTA Ends the Practice of “Bumping”

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association is canceling its long-held rule that permitted, in certain instances, the artificial construction of density to obtain a lower freight classification, a practice commonly known as “bumping.” The cancellation takes effect on August 24.

If you currently use an approved NMFC item to “bump” freight, you may continue to use that item through August 23. After that, you must update your product description with a valid item that reports the true density of your freight.

If you would like help with this transition, please contact your Audit Specialist, who would be happy to guide you to the right compliant product description for your freight.
