Mid-year LTL and TL Pricing Update

IMS Markit and the Journal of Commerce analyzed LTL and truckload pricing through the first half of 2019 and published the following conclusions:
  • LTL and TL rates are still rising on an annualized basis, but more slowly than a year ago.
  • Truckload rate inflation has slowed significantly, while LTL rate inflation has slowed only moderately.
  • LTL carrier price hikes in the second half of 2019 will resume rate growth sequentially and annually, but the overall increase for 2019 should not exceed 5%.
  • Truckload rates have declined for two quarters after hitting an all-time high in December, but are still higher than at the same time a year ago.
  • Truckload rates appear more vulnerable than LTL rates to economic cycles.
